Markandeya Ji Temple is situated in a beautiful place known as Markanday, situated 20 km from Bilaspur. Named after the famous sage Rishi Markanday, this temple holds much significance, especially amongst childless couples. It is said that if a childless person applies kajal in one eye of the idol of Markanday ji and vows to apply the same in the other eye when blessed by a child, he becomes a parent very soon. Markanday ji is also believed to be a savior of children and couples pray to him for long life of their children.

People also say that a dip in the holy spring situated here is said to cure infertility and infant diseases. There is an interesting legend attached to Markandeyaji Temple, which revolves around one Rishi Mrikandu. The rishi had no children and used to pray to Lord Shiva fervently for a child. The Lord blessed him with a son, but also told him that the son will die after reaching just 12 years of age. Rishi Mrikandu named his son Markanday and started living in the constant anxiety and fear of death of his only child.

When Markanday came to know the reason of his father’s fear, he started worshipping Lord Shiva at the same place where the idol stands enshrined today. Markanday got blessed by the Lord, with a long life, on the day of Baishakhi and at that very moment, a spring of water started flowing there. This spring is considered holy and it is said that the pilgrimage of Char Dham is complete only when one takes a dip in this spring. Markanday ji temple serves as the venue of a religious fair that is organized every year at Baisakhi.

Naras Devi temple is situated on a hilltop at Baroha, 2 km from Naras village that falls under the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. The temple is more than 400 years old and is believed to have been constructed by King Kalyan Chand, while establishing Sunhani as the capital of his kingdom. He is also said to have appointed a priest to bring ‘Charnamrit’ for the deity regularly. Naras Devi temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga, also known as Naras Maa. There are a number of legends attached to the temple and its formation.

A popular legend claims that once there was a tree of Summann at the place, where the temple now stands. One day, a sudden flash of light was seen there and the Pindi symbolizing the Goddess appeared. One of the ancestors of a ‘pujari’ (priest) dreamt that the Goddess was asking him to build a temple at the same place and install the ‘Pindi’ there. A legend related to Raja Kalyan Chand states that once the king ordered the priest to make the Goddess materialize before him in human form or face the punishment.

The priest prayed all night to the Goddess and Goddess did materialize before the King from the Pindi, but with her back towards the egoistic King, so as not to give him her ‘Darshan’. Later, due to her wrath, there was a war between the states of Kehloor and Saket and the Kehloor King died in it. Even today, Chandel Rajpoots avoid visiting Naras Mata Mandir. There is a mention of Naresha Devi in Markanday Puran, who granted ‘Darshan’ to King Surath due to his great devotion towards her.

Sheetla Mata Temple is situated in a village named Jangla, at a distance of approximately 1.5 km from Gehrwin, Bilaspur. Like the Golden Temple of Amritsar, this temple is also built in the middle of a tank. A pathway made up of concrete leads one to the temple. It is said that the magnificent idol of the deity installed here was sculpted at Makhowal, near Anandpur Sahib. Goddess Sheetla Devi is believed to be the younger sister of Goddess Badol Devi and symbolize power and peace.

It is said that the Goddess likes cool and peaceful surroundings, where there is water all around, and detests any type of heat. She is known to ward off heat from the body of a person. In many parts of India, it is believed that diseases like small pox and chicken pox represent the manifestation of the Goddess in a human’s body. Though Shitla Mata Temple of Himachal Pradesh is relatively new, it is quite popular amongst the natives

They believe those who pray at the temple with utmost devotion and faith are granted their wishes by the Mata. According to a legend, a resident of Jangla dreamt that the Goddess has asked him to install Her idol in a place with water in abundance. He initially thought of a pond, where he could install the idol of the Goddess. However, he was led to this place and was advised to dig there and carry out Goddess’ wishes. This is how the Sheetla Mata Temple came into being.

It is situated at a distance of approximately 14 km from the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. Located amidst picturesque hills, the temples stands enclosed within a 10 ft high wall. The original name of the deity of the temple was Goddess Sukirti and later, gave rise to Sagirthin. It is said that a Chandel King installed the black-colored idol of the Goddess here, while on his way to Mata Jawalamukhi. The priests of the temple came all the way from Chanderi with him and later settled in the village here.

Raja Deep Chand got the temple complex built, in the latter half of the 17th century. There is a very interesting legends associated with the deity. According to the book on history of the Kings of Bilaspur, written by Shashi Vans Vinod, there was once a king called Raja Sail Chand, who had two queens named Hemvati and Devmati. Rani Hemvati performed Sati on the death of her husband and committed herself to flames in his funeral pyre. She was later called Sagirthin and became the family goddess (Kuldevi) of the rajas. This shrine has a natural source of flowing water too.

Badol Devi Temple is situated in Badol village of Bilaspur. There is a very interesting legend attached to this temple. It is said that one day, an old villager named Bhura noticed that his cow had shed her milk on a particular place. Astonished by this unusual phenomenon, he tries to stop her from going there again. However, somehow she managed to reach the same place everyday and shed her milk. Bhura thought that someone had captivated his cow and fearing the worst, he decided to axe her.

The moment he hit the cow, he noticed that in place of blood, milk was oozing out from her wounds. She ran away and Bhura tried to follow her and in the process, lost his eyesight. He could not find the cow and by the time he came back to his home, he noticed that his eyesight had been restored. When Bhura narrated this unusual incident to the villagers, they decided to dig the place where the cow had shed her milk. On digging, they found a ‘pindi’ of Goddess Durga lying here.

The King of Bilaspur had two wives and each of them built a temple at the place where the idol was found. This led to an argument as to which temple would enshrine the pindi of the Goddess. It is said that the younger wife had built the temple out of faith, while the elder one out of envy. One night, the pindi got automatically installed in the younger queen’s temple and could not be removed from there. The pindi, along with the temple, was known as Goddess Badol Devi, one of the forms of Mother Shakti or Goddess Durga.

The Vijayanagar Empire caused a number of monuments to be built and patronized in the State of Andhra Pradesh. The ornate Lepakshi temples being one of the popular temples of that era. Lepakshi is a small village, which lies nine miles east of Hindupur in Anantapur District of Andhra and is famous for its temple of Veerabhadra, and is also a renowned place where the best specimens of the mural paintings of the Vijayanagar kings are available.

The flat stuccoed granite ceilings of the Vijayanagar Empire provided a suitable background for frescoes as seen at Lepakshi. This temple is a notable example of the Vijayanagar style of architecture, and is built on a low rocky hill, which is called Kurmasaila so called because the bill is like a tortoise, in shape. An inscription on the exit of the outer wall of the temple records that one Virupanna constructed it in the 16th century.

The beautiful sculptures on the prakaram attract the pilgrims’ attention. These include 14 forms of Siva, like Dakshinamurthi, Ardhanareeswara, Tripurantaka etc. The hall of creepers is another excellent work of art, which has provided perennial inspiration to textile designers over the years. About 500m, North-East of the temple stands India’s largest monolithic Nandhi, measuring about 8.25m long and 4,60m high.

Built in the year of AD 950, Mukteswara temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and is carved with figures of ascetics in several poses of meditation. The highlight of the temple, is the magnificent torana – the decorative gateway, an arched masterpiece, reminiscent of Buddhist influence in Orissa.

This temple is considered to be the gem of Orissan architecture. The sculptured gateway, the Jagamohana with diamond shaped latticed windows and decorated interiors and the plethora of sculptural work all deserve mention in this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva Although it is only a small monument rising to a height of 35 feet. Literally every inch of its surface is carved. This temple has also been described as a dream realized in sandstone and it is a monument where it is said sculpture and architecture are in complete harmony with one another. This temple dates back to the 10th century.

The sculptural decoration of the Mukteswara is exquisitely executed. The beautiful sculptures eloquently speak of the sense of proportion and perspective of the sculptor and their unique ability in the exact depiction of the minutest objects. The builders of Mukteswara Temple introduced new architectural designs, new art motifs and new conceptions about the icnography of the cult images. There are a number of depictions of skeletal ascetics among the sculptural images, most of them shown in teaching or meditation poses, which seems appropriate as the name Mukteswara means “Lord who gives freedom through Yoga”.

This is believed to be the ’shakti pita’ where Sati’s eye fell. Naina means eye. The temple is also known as Mahishapitha because of it’s association with Mahishasur.

Mahishasur was given a boon by Brahma, the creator, that he could only be defeated by a maiden. His story is a major section in the Devi Mahatmya and can be found in greater detail in the Devi Bhagavata Purana. He enslaved the Gods and made life impossible for the righteous people of that time. To save themselves the Deva’s got together and combined their shakti’s (Goddess power within them) to create a new Devi powerful enough to defeat him. She stationed Herself on a nearby hill called Mahishapith. Hearing of Her unearthly beauty Mahishasur wanted to marry the Divine maiden. She agreed to the marriage on the condition that he could defeat Her in battle. She defeated his armies and finally Mahishasur himself. She plucked out both his eyes and gave his skull to Brahma. The Gods showered Her with flowers and cried out “Jay Naina” and hence Her name.

Another story claims that a cowherd named Naina, found a cow dripping milk onto a pindi with eyes on it. That night Devi Ma appeared to the cowherd in a dream and told him that the pindi was Her own form. He was told that he should build a temple there and worship the pindi. He did so and later a larger temple was built.
